Invention vs Innovation

It is 2016, we are not living in space colonies nor do we have flying cars or even mass marketed self driving cars. Electric cars are only available to those who can afford it. Cell phone technology has stalled and become stale.

The United States has seen a massive decline in STEM Education. We fund wars instead of education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The result?

No one is inventing anything anymore! Seriously, ask your self when the last true INVENTION came out? When was the last time something came out the revolutionized society, not just an industry but society on a whole?

The problem is people are not inventing they are just innovating. So what is the difference? In its purest sense, “invention“ can be defined as the creation of a product or introduction of a process for the first time. “Innovation,” on the other hand, occurs if someone improves on or makes a significant contribution to an existing product, process or service.

There lies the problem, companies are just taking tech and processes that exist and improving on them. Not one company is coming out with something new. Touchscreens were around long before Steve Jobs held an iPhone, Bio Metrics has been around since the 80’s. All of these companies that put on a big dog and pony show to show us technology have only innovated not invented the tech. There is a huge difference between that.

This country, this world, will not see true economic growth by simply growing the middle class or ending big banks. The only way we grow as people, is to reinvest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Unless we encourage young people to get into STEM Education and invent the next big thing, we will continue slow growth instead of true growth.
